James tells us that Elijah was a man with a nature like ours. I’m wondering if I could possibly get a nature like his! It’s encouraging to me that he was like me; but what I would like is for me to be like him!
Take some time to read I Kings 17 and 18. Here is this guy who suddenly appears on the scene, tells the king of Israel that it isn’t going to rain until Elijah says so, and then he disappears for three and a half years while a drought and famine seizes the country. Ahab looks for him everywhere and, then suddenly, there he is again. He gets back in Ahab’s face and challenges the queen’s prophets to a duel!
One against 450 isn’t great odds, but you would think that he had an army of thousands on his side. He has gone from challenging the king and queen to taking on 450 of the most powerful religious leaders of the day. Then he proceeds to humiliate this bunch in front of the whole nation.
Finally, after demonstrating the superiority of the God of Israel over the false god, Baal, he had all of them executed. It’s the stuff of super heroes! If he was just like me, I want to be just like him!
