At Landstown Community Church, we have a strict non-discrimination policy. Let me explain.

We are opposed to all sin. If the Bible says it is sin, we do not discriminate. No sin is acceptable for followers of Jesus Christ. Sin is defined as missing the mark. It is not measuring up to the standard. What is the standard? If the standard is my next door neighbor, I probably measure up pretty well. If the standard is my brother or my sister, I may be doing pretty well. I may even measure up fairly well if the standard is the pastor. How many people do you know who think they’re doing ok because they think the standard is some person or some man-made requirements?

Is the standard society itself? If society says it is acceptable, does that make it acceptable? The standard for the definition of sin is the character and behavior of the Son of God. Holiness is the standard. Not a fake exterior holiness, but a quality of life emanating from the heart and soul of the person. It is God-likeness.

The apostle Paul writes in Romans 3:23 that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We do not discriminate between sinners. Since “all have sinned,” we are all in the same boat spiritually. As someone has said, the ground is level at the foot of the cross. Paul says a little later in his letter to the Roman believers, “The wages of sin is death.” All of us stand under the penalty of death. No one is exempt. But the next statement is also true: “But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Just as we do not discriminate between sinners, we do not discriminate about the solution to our sin. The apostles Peter and John, speaking to the rulers of their city, spelled out the solution to the sin problem. They said, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” If there is only one name that carries salvation from sin, we cannot discriminate and allow for any possible exceptions. Jesus Himself said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” If there is only One Way, we cannot discriminate by allowing for any other “roads to God.”

After Jesus was crucified by the Romans and was raised back to life by the power of God, Peter told the people that they needed to “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins.” Again, we do not discriminate with what our response needs to be to the fact that all of us are sinners and there is only one Solution to that problem. Everyone needs to repent, to change their thinking about their sin and to commit to changing their behavior. To recognize that Jesus provides the solution to my problem but to then refuse to do anything about it results in darkness enshrouding our hearts and minds. Paul tells the Ephesian believers that “you should no longer walk as the rest of the [unbelievers] walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their heart (refusal to repent).”

We do, however, discriminate between saints and sinners. We discriminate between light and darkness, between day and night. We discriminate between those who have repented and surrendered their lives to God through Jesus Christ and those who have not. We discriminate between those who have humbled themselves before God and received His cleansing from sin and those who refuse to humble themselves and insist on going their own way. We discriminate between those who see their need for salvation and have cried out to God for mercy and those who think they can make it on their own. We discriminate between those who accept what God says in the Bible about their sin and those who think they know better. We discriminate between those who see themselves as God sees them and those who insist that they are smarter than God, who believe that God’s standards are outdated, and that they can redefine and rewrite what Almighty God has instituted. And in these and similar ways we insist on our right to discriminate.

Isaiah 9:8-12: “The LORD sent a word against Jacob, and it has fallen on Israel. All the people will know – Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria – who say in pride and arrogance of heart:

“‘The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with hewn stones; the sycamores are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.’

“Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him (Israel), and spur his enemies on, the Syrians before and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with an open mouth.

“For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.”

In “The Harbinger,” Jonathan Cahn relates this Scripture with the events surrounding 9/11 and asks the question, “Is God giving America a wake-up call? Are these events a “warning” of judgment to come? If you haven’t read “The Harbinger,” I encourage you to pick up a copy. It will be worth your time.

Landstown Community Church is a member congregation of Restoration Network International based in Sarasota, FL. Restoration is one of nine networks within the Association of Cornerstone Networks International (ACNI). The founder of ACNI is Pastor Gerald E. Martin. Pastor Gerald and his wife Sophia live in Harrisonburg, VA. The following is Pastor Gerald’s account of how the Cornerstone churches began.

“Like all of us, Cornerstone has a past; and in order to know our heart it is necessary to know something about that past. Since I was so much a part of the beginning of Cornerstone, the story also includes aspects of my past that have helped in the shaping of the church and ministry. Especially in the early days of planting and developing the church, my story and the church story tend to blend together making it difficult to distinguish one from the other. Actually, it’s all part of the same story.

“So why is it important for people to know about the past? You have probably heard the saying, ‘If you don’t know from where you have come, you probably won’t know where you are going.’ It may also be true that you won’t know where you are. Knowing our history gives us a perspective on the present and future that otherwise would not be possible. We have found that a major obstacle to spiritual growth that many believers face is failure to adequately come to terms with their past.

“For whatever reason, when we become Christians the tendency is to ignore the past in an attempt to hide what we really were or continue to be. We stuff it down and try to forget it, especially if our past was painful or unpleasant. What we don’t realize, however, is that it never goes away. Our past is a real part of who we are, and try as we might to rid ourselves of the hurts, problems, and unresolved issues, we continue to be negatively affected, unless our past is properly dealt with.

“Many people who have been saved from their sins don’t know that they can also be saved from the hurt and guilt of their past. They don’t know that God has provided a way for them to be set free, healed, forgiven, delivered, and changed into a new person. Over the years, we have had the privilege to minister into the lives of many hurting people who have come to us discouraged and broken. Helping them come to terms with their past, and seeing them move from brokenness to wholeness, has been a tremendous blessing.”

Birth Pains

“As a church, we understand the challenge of coming to terms with hurtful experiences. Cornerstone was born out of a very painful situation. Previous to the planting of the church, I was the pastor of a traditional church in the Mennonite denomination. It had a long history and a rich heritage with the distinction of being the oldest Mennonite church in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, established in the early 1800’s. I began my ministry with the church as an interim pastor with the expectation that I would only be there for a short time and then move on to a larger church.

“We had just come out of a church where things had not worked out as we had hoped and we needed time to regain perspective and discern future direction. The church into which we were coming also had gone through a difficult time. A number of families had left, leaving those that remained feeling pretty discouraged. So a hurting pastor and a hurting church may not have seemed to be a good combination but the interim arrangement turned out to be good for both of us. It removed any pressure on my part to prove myself and on the part of the church to impress the new pastor.

“The atmosphere was very relaxed and since I was only planning to be there nine months, I preached my heart without worrying about how it might be received. I figured I had nothing to lose. Perhaps the church thought the same way, that since I wouldn’t be there long they wouldn’t have to take what I said too seriously. In reality, our hearts connected. People in the church started responding to my preaching and leadership, and renewal began to happen. New people started coming and the church began to grow. After a few months the interim arrangement was changed to a long-term assignment and we agreed to serve a four-year term.

“When we first went to the church everyone agreed that they wanted to see the church grow. The declining attendance had been a great concern. So when the church started to grow, it was viewed as a very positive turn of events and everyone was encouraged and excited. People were getting saved and filled with the Holy Spirit. People looking in from the outside were amazed that what was happening could be happening in that church. It became one of the bright spots in the conference. We were actually experiencing new wine in an old wineskin.

“However, we were soon to learn the truth of Jesus’ words, ‘You cannot pour new wine into old wineskins.’ As the church grew, the ministry began developing in a way that was different from the way things had always been done. Some in the church started having second thoughts about wanting the church to grow. It seems that they had not realized that along with growth comes change. As more and more new people came into the church, those who had been used to influencing the decision-making process found themselves in a minority. They felt like their church was being stolen away from them.

“I won’t share all the details of what happened, but in a nutshell, an opposition group formed within the church and an attempt was made to shut down the new life that was taking place. In an attempt to have me removed as the pastor, a petition was circulated and submitted to our conference leadership. Had I responded in the same way I had before in similar situations, I would have simply resigned and moved on to another church; but God made it clear to me that I was not to make the decision to leave and that I was to walk it out to the end, whatever it might be.

“A listening team made up of three persons from the congregation, three from the district, and three from the conference, was appointed in response to the petition to help discern the situation. The team set a day to meet and invited anyone who so desired to come in and share what they had on their minds. While there were some who voiced their dissatisfaction, most had positive reports to share. Testimonies were shared of how their lives had been changed and what God was doing. Afterwards one of the conference leaders shared that hearing the testimonies was for him like a spiritual renewal.

“Much to the disappointment of those who desired to have me removed, the discernment of the listening team was that I should continue as the pastor. After that, things settled down for a while and the church continued to grow. However, when it came time to process the renewal of my contract for another four-year term, an attempt was made to keep that from happening. While the opposition was not strong enough to have me removed as the pastor, in the end it was strong enough to prevent me from being called to a second term. When that became final, I felt released to move on at the end of my term.

“Realizing that with our departure, many of the new people in the church would probably scatter, the district leadership approached me and asked if I would be willing to pastor a new church if one was started. I agreed to that possibility. So the district council met and took action to plant a new church with the understanding that I would serve as the pastor. A congregational meeting was called, and the chairman of the council announced the plan to the whole church and indicated that everyone could choose to either go with the new church or remain with the existing church.

“To say the least, not everyone was happy with that decision, but it nevertheless provided a way for a new wineskin to be developed in order to contain the new wine that was fermenting, and at the same time to preserve the old wineskin from further breaking. It seemed to be a win/win situation. As the transition unfolded, the new emerging ministry didn’t miss a beat. It simply changed locations, took on a new name, and continued to grow. The existing church called a new pastor and returned to its former pattern of church life. The people were given a clear choice.”

New Life Out of Brokenness

“So, what is the message in all of this? No matter what happens, God can and does work things together for our good. Out of a broken, painful situation, God raised up a new church and ministry that exceeded by far anything we could have thought or imagined at the time. What the enemy had designed for evil, God turned into an incredible blessing. We continue to be amazed at what God has done in response to our walking through the situation rather than seeking an escape. We give him all the glory for He alone is worthy to receive praise.

“Perhaps the greater message is that what He did for the church is what He does for each of us as individuals. Could it be that God allowed Cornerstone to be birthed the way it was in order to serve as an example of God’s grace? Over the years we have seen that what He did for the church He has done for many people who have come to us from broken, hurting situations in their personal lives, many of whom we have seen healed and restored.

“I’m reminded of the Gaither song, ‘Something beautiful, something good. All my confusion He understood. All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife; but He made something beautiful of my life.’ That’s what He did for the church and He will do the same for you. No matter what your situation is; no matter how much you may be hurting; no matter what anyone says about you or does to you; when you yield it all to Him, He takes it and makes something beautiful out of it for His glory.”

During the years of 1978-1979, there was an interest by three families living in the “Charlestowne” community of Virginia Beach to start an outreach and witness in that area. These families were all members of the Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church in Chesapeake. They shared their concern with the pastors of the church, who in turn approached Harold and Twila Buckwalter concerning the possibility of giving leadership to such an outreach.

A primary concern was that evangelism and proclaiming the Word of God be its primary purpose. The name “Upper Room Chapel (Mennonite)” was agreed on. The first Sunday service was held September 14, 1980 in the Virginia Door Co. building. Pastor Harold’s first message was from Ephesians 4:1-11, titled “One Body, Members of Each Other.”

In June of 1983, developer R.G. Moore agreed to donate 3.6 acres at the entrance of Landstown Lakes. On August 1, 1985, Upper Room Chapel received the deed for 3.57 acres “free and clear” from the R.G. Moore Corp. A groundbreaking service was held on the property on December 8, 1985 and excavation began on December 23. The first service was held in the new building on April 5, 1987.

Harold Buckwalter presented his resignation as pastor in January of 1987 and concluded his ministry at Upper Room Chapel on May 24.

Beginning in November of 1983, consideration was given to change the name of the church. The spring of 1987 saw the name Landstown Community Church replace Upper Room Chapel as the name of the church.

In May of 1987, Noah Stoltzfus was called to be the new pastor. The Stoltzfus family moved to Virginia Beach in September. The following year the sanctuary was completed.

During the twelve years that Pastor Noah ministered at Landstown, missions giving and participation was encouraged. Outreach into the community was a priority. Vacation Bible School was held in the summer and Christmas caroling with horse-drawn wagons was held in December.

Pastor Noah participated in a fellowship group of local pastors and various other congregations either rented Landstown’s facilities over the years or joined LCC in community services.

One of Pastor Noah’s emphases was the need for small group fellowship. These groups were called Growth Groups and many who attended LCC participated in these groups. The use of spiritual gifts in the various ministries of the church was also a priority during the years that Noah ministered here.

Pastor Noah was known as a down-to-earth person with great compassion. He was a man of integrity and an encourager.

In 1997-1998, phase one of the building expansion was completed. The fellowship hall was expanded and three classrooms were added.

Pastor Noah concluded his twelve years of pastoral ministry at Landstown at the end of June, 1999. He passed away in January, 2008.

Sam Scaggs was called as an Interim Pastor for a year in 2000. Sam’s emphasis in his year of ministry was empowering leadership and holistic small groups. Following Sam’s ministry, Merlin and Linda Miller were called early in 2001.

Pastor Merlin led the Landstown congregation in Operation Mr. Roy, a program to encourage Bible reading and outreach into the community. LCC also participated in 40 Days of Purpose which energized the small group ministry. Under Merlin’s leadership, the church also revised the constitution and by-laws.

In the fall of 2005, conversations were initiated by Pastor Merlin and the elders with Pastor Gerald Martin of Cornerstone Church and Ministries regarding the Landstown congregation coming under the ministry of CCMI.

In early 2006, Landstown withdrew from the Virginia Conference of the Mennonite Church and began to work toward a relationship with Cornerstone. LCC officially became a Cornerstone congregation in June of 2006 and Marlin and Ruth Sharp were called to be the pastor couple.

Landstown celebrated our thirtieth anniversary in September 2010.

Over the years we have tried to provide an opportunity for newcomers in our church to get acquainted with us. One of the primary ways we have done this is through membership orientation classes. We have used various formats over the years, weekly classes on Sunday mornings, and classes in the evenings, but more recently we have used a ten-week format that we called School of Leaders, Level One, where we attempted to give an overview of who we are as a church, how we function together, and what newcomers can expect to encounter as they get involved in the church.

We look at School of Leaders a little like we do pre-marital counseling. The purpose of counseling a couple before they get married is to help them talk about differences they tend to ignore. A general rule is that what isn’t talked about before marriage has a greater potential of becoming a problem after marriage. In a similar way, what newcomers don’t know about the church before they make a decision to join may set them up for disappointment and misunderstanding later on.

However, like in pre-marital counseling, even with our best efforts at addressing the differences, they may discover it doesn’t always sink in. Like a young couple in love that has difficulty imagining problems, people coming into a new church tend to view things the same. At first everything is new and seems wonderful and great, especially if the newcomer comes from a more traditional church where things have been a little on the dead side. Actually, it’s fun working with newcomers. Having them tell you how great the church is, how wonderful the pastor is, and how exciting the ministry is, isn’t at all hard to take. It feels good.

What helps to keep things in proper perspective, though, is to realize that the honeymoon will most likely end and give way to reality and, again like in a marriage, they may begin to see weaknesses and faults that start bothering them. Some are able to realize what is happening, work through it with or without counseling, and become fruitful participants in the body. Others may find the reality too difficult to accept and choose to leave. Like one couple who left one of the churches in our network recently said, “If we had known that this church is about worship, teaching, and healing, we wouldn’t have come in the first place.”

Even with the effort we make to help people understand what we are about, not everyone gets it. Some may be so caught up in their own vision and understanding of how church is to happen that they simply don’t hear what is being said or if they do hear they may not take it seriously. Others may think they can change things after they get involved. When it doesn’t work out according to their expectations one of two things usually happen. Either they change and embrace the vision of the church or they get upset and choose to leave and find another church. Over the years we have seen it go both ways.

We try to do what we can to help people work through any troubling issues, but like Jesus modeled for us, when persons don’t accept what we have to offer, we don’t run after them and try to convince them to stay. We have learned to hold people with an open hand and give them freedom to make their own choices. There may even be times when we actually recommend another church to persons more in line with their personal expectations, desires, and needs. While we are a church open to everyone, we don’t claim to be a church for everyone. It takes all kinds of churches to meet the needs of all kinds of people. Landstown is only one option among many.

The way we do church is not the only way and perhaps not the best way but it’s the way God has led us and that is what we try to make clear to new people coming into our church. How other churches do it is between them and God. Our responsibility is not to judge others but to be and do what God has called us to be and do. The Landstown story, of which this is the introduction, is an attempt to put in writing those things we want newcomers to know about the church before making it their spiritual home. It’s a story that will include both successes and failures and how, through it all, we have learned to trust in God and depend on His Word. Hopefully it will serve as a window into the heart of Landstown Community Church and the unique ministry and purpose God has called us to fulfill.

When John the Baptist, the last of the Old Testament prophets, appeared on the scene, his message was fairly simple. It was much the same as those prophets of God who had gone before him. “Repent, for the kingdom of God is near!”

Jesus came to John to be baptized in water. The Father testified of His pleasure with His Son as He baptized Him in the Holy Spirit. After forty days of being tempted by the archenemy, Jesus appeared on the evangelism circuit along with John. What was His message? “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

Jesus was crucified; He rose from the dead; and He ascended to the right hand of the Father. On Pentecost Sunday, ten days after His return to heavenly power, He poured out the Holy Spirit on His infant church. Peter was the first of the apostles to speak up. What was his message to the people of Jerusalem? “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins.”

The apostle Paul, after being converted from a Christ hater to a Christ preacher, moved all over present-day Turkey and over into Greece, Macedonia, and probably even Albania. As he was explaining his message to the philosophers on the Areopagus, he shared with them what God’s message was for them. “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands everyone everywhere to repent.”

The writer of the letter to the Hebrews lists six things that he considers “elementary principles of Christ.” The first of these listed in Hebrews 6 is “repentance from dead works.”

As the apostle John is revealing the message of Jesus to the churches of Asia, he records seven separate words. These seven churches are typical of seven different kinds of churches that have existed through the ages. These seven churches also picture different churches that are in existence in the present day. What did Jesus have to say to these seven churches?

Church #1: “Repent and do the first works.”

Church # 2: “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

Church #3: “Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against (the Nicolaitans) with the sword of My mouth.”

Church #4: “I gave (Jezebel) time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.”

Church #5: “Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent.”

Church #6: “Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.”

Church #7: “As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be zealous and repent.”

In the final analysis, repentance has been the consistent message from the time that sin first entered the world. It will be the message until the end of this present age. When the wrath of God is poured out on this world in the final days, Revelation tells us that “the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries (literally: drugs) or their sexual immorality or their thefts.”

Maybe you think repentance is just for godless people. Review the seven churches. Jesus’ call to five out of seven churches down through the ages and in the present time is “Repent!” Are we listening?

Jesus said to those who were following Him, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

How does God receive glory from the good works that you and I do? If you think about the common descriptions of “good works,” when people see our good works, don’t they glorify us, and not the Father?

Tim Tebow has been getting a lot of attention for his public demonstrations of faith. Is the Father receiving glory for Tim’s life and how he conducts himself? Or is Tim receiving the accolades? Nothing against Mr. Tebow. I think he’s an awesome guy, attempting to live in such a way that people see his commitment to God. But are the thousands of Tim Tebow fans glorifying God or are they glorifying Tim?

What I hear Jesus saying here is that we should do our good works in such a way in front of people that they don’t see us; instead, they see that God is working through us. How do we do that? I don’t believe that what Jesus was talking about here was that He wants us to be good people; or that we should be nice. I believe that Jesus was telling His followers that they should live in such a way that it is obvious to people who observe us that God’s power is doing the “good works.”

It is the clear teaching of the New Testament that we who follow Jesus should be involved in the same things in which Jesus involved Himself. How did Jesus let His light shine? Nicodemus, a prominent Jewish leader, came to Jesus one night “and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him’” (John 3:2).

What got the attention of the people? How did they know that Jesus came from God? It was the miracles that He performed. I’m sure they would have been impressed by His holy life; but it was actually His holiness that upset them. (It showed them that they weren’t holy.)

Could it be that what Jesus is talking about here is that we are to do what only God can do? We are to love others; but nonbelievers can do that. We are to serve those around us; but the heathen can do that. What are the things that we can do that can be done only when God’s power is flowing through us?

Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the (good) works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:12-14). When we do what Jesus did, and even greater things than that, “the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

I don’t know about you, but I want to see the Father get some glory! “Father, … Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You” (John 17:1)! Me, too, Father! Me, too!

Sometimes it’s good to be reminded of things that you already know.

In our Wednesday evening intercessory prayer time, we were reminded that the enjoyment or delight in our prayer life does not come automatically. Many times we come to prayer and, because we don’t have a discernible desire to pray, we let it go. “I’ll pray when I feel more like it.” And then it never happens.

It is good to be reminded that the desire to pray is a gift from our Father in heaven who wants to share in our lives. He wants us to bring our concerns and problems to Him. He wants us to share our joys with Him as well. As a loving Father, He wants to hear from us. In the natural, we get busy and we think we can handle all our stuff by ourselves; and then when our world seems like it is going to crash around us, we think about God.

As parents, we want to stay connected to our children. So God will give us the desire to pray as we turn our attention to Him. But then we also have to stay with it. It can’t become a haphazard exercise. The regular discipline of daily prayer is essential to keep that connection fresh and energized.

Only when we receive from the Father the desire to pray, and discipline ourselves to come to Him regularly, will the pleasure of prayer become a part of our lives. Are you struggling with your prayer life? Ask God to give you the desire to pray, the want to, and make it a regular part of your daily routine. You will be amazed how quickly those special times with the Father become delightful times of sharing together.

In the new book, The Harbinger, author Rabbi Jonathan Cahn lays out the connection between 9/11 and the 2008 economic collapse to a prophecy in Isaiah 9:10.

The Isaiah prophecy deals with a warning that God gave to ancient Israel regarding their response to the initial invasion by Assyria. Instead of repenting for their rejection of God and His ways, they determined to rebuild and to become stronger. Isaiah points out that this was a response of pride and arrogance against God, and eventually led to Israel’s complete destruction.

Rabbi Cahn points out that the events of 9/11 in New York answer, in every detail, the ancient prophecy. He records in agonizing detail how America has responded by vowing to rebuild and be stronger instead of returning to God and His ways. As he paints the picture of the ten years since 9/11, he shows how the American response to 9/11 is tied directly to the economic collapse of 2008.

His conclusion is that, unless America repents and returns to Godly ways, we also face ultimate judgment. In pointing this out, he also is clear in sharing God’s heart of mercy, and His desire to forgive and restore. Even though The Harbinger is a warning of grave consequences for our national pride, it is also a call to place our hope in God and His word and not in human solutions, whether they be political, moral, or economic.

This is an eye-opening book! Get it and read it! You will be shocked and you will be changed!

At Landstown Community Church, we call our small group ministry LIFE Groups. This is not just a clever description. It is a desire on our part to explain what small groups, or any other church ministry, are all about. In speaking about small group ministry, Reggie McNeal (in his book The Present Future) makes the following statement: “Effective groups where people grow allow people to declare to each other what is going on in their lives, what they’d like to see going on in their lives, and what kind of help and accountability they need to move toward their hopes and away from their frustrations.”

This is a predominant reason why many small groups resort to Bible studies and discussions using various prepared curricula. We are not prepared to deal with what is happening in our lives. Our lives are a shambles, or close to it. We use small groups or church as an escape from life, so “declar[ing] to each other what is going on in [our] lives” is not going to happen.

I believe that church should be about life, whether it be in the large group gathering or the small group. We gather to worship because we recognize that we are not alone in this universe and the One who has the power to do anything about our lives is worthy of our adoration. We submit ourselves to the preaching and teaching of the Bible because we recognize that this Word is a message of life. We share in fellowship events because we recognize that we need others in our lives to make life worthwhile. We gather in small groups, not because we need more Bible study, which we probably do; but because we need to share our lives with others who can help us “move toward [our] hopes and away from [our] frustrations.” We need others in our lives who will hold us accountable for how we live our lives. Do we want others to hold us accountable? Not most of the time; but we need them to do it in order for us to be successful… living our lives.
