How does God receive glory from the good works that you and I do? If you think about the common descriptions of “good works,” when people see our good works, don’t they glorify us, and not the Father?

Tim Tebow has been getting a lot of attention for his public demonstrations of faith. Is the Father receiving glory for Tim’s life and how he conducts himself? Or is Tim receiving the accolades? Nothing against Mr. Tebow. I think he’s an awesome guy, attempting to live in such a way that people see his commitment to God. But are the thousands of Tim Tebow fans glorifying God or are they glorifying Tim?

What I hear Jesus saying here is that we should do our good works in such a way in front of people that they don’t see us; instead, they see that God is working through us. How do we do that? I don’t believe that what Jesus was talking about here was that He wants us to be good people; or that we should be nice. I believe that Jesus was telling His followers that they should live in such a way that it is obvious to people who observe us that God’s power is doing the “good works.”

It is the clear teaching of the New Testament that we who follow Jesus should be involved in the same things in which Jesus involved Himself. How did Jesus let His light shine? Nicodemus, a prominent Jewish leader, came to Jesus one night “and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him’” (John 3:2).

What got the attention of the people? How did they know that Jesus came from God? It was the miracles that He performed. I’m sure they would have been impressed by His holy life; but it was actually His holiness that upset them. (It showed them that they weren’t holy.)

Could it be that what Jesus is talking about here is that we are to do what only God can do? We are to love others; but nonbelievers can do that. We are to serve those around us; but the heathen can do that. What are the things that we can do that can be done only when God’s power is flowing through us?

Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the (good) works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:12-14). When we do what Jesus did, and even greater things than that, “the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

I don’t know about you, but I want to see the Father get some glory! “Father, … Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You” (John 17:1)! Me, too, Father! Me, too!

In our Wednesday evening intercessory prayer time, we were reminded that the enjoyment or delight in our prayer life does not come automatically. Many times we come to prayer and, because we don’t have a discernible desire to pray, we let it go. “I’ll pray when I feel more like it.” And then it never happens.

It is good to be reminded that the desire to pray is a gift from our Father in heaven who wants to share in our lives. He wants us to bring our concerns and problems to Him. He wants us to share our joys with Him as well. As a loving Father, He wants to hear from us. In the natural, we get busy and we think we can handle all our stuff by ourselves; and then when our world seems like it is going to crash around us, we think about God.

As parents, we want to stay connected to our children. So God will give us the desire to pray as we turn our attention to Him. But then we also have to stay with it. It can’t become a haphazard exercise. The regular discipline of daily prayer is essential to keep that connection fresh and energized.

Only when we receive from the Father the desire to pray, and discipline ourselves to come to Him regularly, will the pleasure of prayer become a part of our lives. Are you struggling with your prayer life? Ask God to give you the desire to pray, the want to, and make it a regular part of your daily routine. You will be amazed how quickly those special times with the Father become delightful times of sharing together.

The Isaiah prophecy deals with a warning that God gave to ancient Israel regarding their response to the initial invasion by Assyria. Instead of repenting for their rejection of God and His ways, they determined to rebuild and to become stronger. Isaiah points out that this was a response of pride and arrogance against God, and eventually led to Israel’s complete destruction.

Rabbi Cahn points out that the events of 9/11 in New York answer, in every detail, the ancient prophecy. He records in agonizing detail how America has responded by vowing to rebuild and be stronger instead of returning to God and His ways. As he paints the picture of the ten years since 9/11, he shows how the American response to 9/11 is tied directly to the economic collapse of 2008.

His conclusion is that, unless America repents and returns to Godly ways, we also face ultimate judgment. In pointing this out, he also is clear in sharing God’s heart of mercy, and His desire to forgive and restore. Even though The Harbinger is a warning of grave consequences for our national pride, it is also a call to place our hope in God and His word and not in human solutions, whether they be political, moral, or economic.

This is an eye-opening book! Get it and read it! You will be shocked and you will be changed!

This is a predominant reason why many small groups resort to Bible studies and discussions using various prepared curricula. We are not prepared to deal with what is happening in our lives. Our lives are a shambles, or close to it. We use small groups or church as an escape from life, so “declar[ing] to each other what is going on in [our] lives” is not going to happen.

I believe that church should be about life, whether it be in the large group gathering or the small group. We gather to worship because we recognize that we are not alone in this universe and the One who has the power to do anything about our lives is worthy of our adoration. We submit ourselves to the preaching and teaching of the Bible because we recognize that this Word is a message of life. We share in fellowship events because we recognize that we need others in our lives to make life worthwhile. We gather in small groups, not because we need more Bible study, which we probably do; but because we need to share our lives with others who can help us “move toward [our] hopes and away from [our] frustrations.” We need others in our lives who will hold us accountable for how we live our lives. Do we want others to hold us accountable? Not most of the time; but we need them to do it in order for us to be successful… living our lives.

Session 2: Correction Ideas that Touch the Heart The goal of discipline is a changed heart so the way we discipline is very important. In this session you’ll learn tools and strategies to address heart issues in your kids. We’ll define a change of heart for children of various ages and you’ll learn strategies that go deeper than simple behavior modification. You’ll understand seven categories of consequences and how to use them to motivate heart change.

The question of where Jesus came from is very significant when we want to understand who He came to be. He grew up, had an itinerant ministry, and was eventually crucified. His followers claimed that He came back to life. Now if all we knew was where He was born and the events surrounding His birth, that probably would be too much for us to handle.

The apostle John tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). He is telling us that the Word was already in existence when time began. When “God created the heavens and the earth,” the Word already was. He is telling us that the Word not only existed in the beginning of time but that He existed in close relationship with God. He was alongside; He was in company with God. He is telling us that the Word Himself existed as God. He existed in the beginning; He existed in company with God; He existed as God.

“He was in the beginning with God” (John 1:2). Not only was He in existence with God in the beginning, but He was active as God. “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:3). Everything that exists was made by His agency. In other words, He was the active force that brought all things into existence. When “God said, ‘Let there be light,’” it was the Word that brought that light into existence. There is nothing that exists that came into being apart from Him.

John says that He came into the world, the very world that He brought into being, and that same world didn’t recognize Him. “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him” (John 1:10). John says that He came into His place, the very world that He made for Himself, and the people that He had created didn’t receive Him. They didn’t welcome Him. “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him” (John 1:11).

John tells us that the Word that existed in the beginning with God and was, in fact God, became human. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). John identifies this Word in the flesh as Jesus Christ in verse 17 of chapter one of his Gospel. He then introduces us to John the Baptizer who, seeing Jesus coming toward Him, proclaims Him to be the Lamb of God, the sacrifice that God had provided to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29). John proclaims Him to be “preferred before me,” or of higher rank than I. He tells his followers that this One “was before me.” He tells the crowd that he saw the Holy Spirit come down from heaven and rest on Him, and then testified that “this is the Son of God.”

This is in agreement with what the angel Gabriel told Mary when he told her that she would give birth to One who “will be called the Son of the Highest;” and that “the power of the Highest will overshadow you,” and “that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).

The apostle Paul says in Philippians 2 that Christ Jesus, “being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,” but willingly gave up His divine prerogatives and humbled Himself as a human being and eventually submitted Himself to the death of the cross (Philippians 2:5-8).

Hebrews 1 tells us that God has spoken to us by His Son, through whom He made the worlds. He describes Him as “the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of His person” (Hebrews 1:2-3).

Christmas has very little meaning, if any, if I do  not see past the Baby in the manger and see the Son of God, the Creator God, who existed from before the beginning of time, and who submitted Himself to human weakness in order to take away the sins of those whom He had created. Without the Word who became flesh, Christmas is just another winter holiday, which is what our society has decreed it to be. When I take God and eternity out of it, I’m not left with very much; which explains pepper spray at WalMart and camping out at Best Buy to be the first to get the latest gadget that will be obsolete before the year is out.

When Christians talk about Christ being taken out of Christmas, we’re not so concerned with the Baby in the manger as we are about the Savior on the Cross. Of course, you can’t have One without the Other.

TODAY following the service we will be celebrating the 100th birthday of Gertrude Jeter (Abuela) in the church fellowship hall, from about 12:30 to 2:00 . A light lunch and cake will be provided. Come and rejoice with us!

The cost is $20.00 per person or $35.00 per couple.  If you have children, you do not want to miss this seminar!  “Punishment is negative; discipline is positive. Punishment focuses on the past misdeeds. Discipline focuses on the future right thing your child can do next time. Punishment is often motivated out of anger. Discipline is motivated out of love. Punishment focuses on justice to balance the scales. Discipline focuses on teaching wisdom.” (seminar session #3) This seminar is designed to help parents learn strategies to discipline, not punish.
