II Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,” and verse 17 follows: “…that the man (generic – male or female) of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
All Scripture is breathed out by God. The Scriptures that I like are God-breathed. The Scriptures that I don’t like are God-breathed. The scriptures that I agree with are God-breathed. The Scriptures that I don’t agree with are God-breathed. The Scriptures that I understand are God-breathed. The Scriptures that I don’t understand are God-breathed.
If I allow the Scriptures to teach me (doctrine); to reprove me (rebuke); to correct me; to instruct me in righteousness, then the Scriptures are profitable to me. If I sit in judgment of the Scriptures and do not allow them to do their intended work in me, then they are not profitable to me. If I decide that I will accept this Scripture but reject that one, then what I reject cannot accomplish its intended work in me.
Jesus said to His heavenly Father, “Your word is truth” (John 17:17). He did not say that some of His word is truth or part of His word is truth. He simply said that God’s word is truth. When I decide that some of the Scripture is not truth to me, then I bring all of it into question. Inevitably, what I reject someone else accepts and what I accept someone else will reject.
Psalm 119:160 says, “The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures (continues) forever.” At any point that part of the Bible is not true, the rest is brought into doubt. If Genesis 1 is not truth, how do we know that John 3 is truth? If Jonah isn’t truth, can we be sure that John 20 is truth?
I choose to accept what the Bible says about itself. Otherwise, how do I possibly know what is truth and what is not? It all becomes subjective. Men and women of far greater intelligence than I have been attempting to disprove the Bible for centuries and have not been able to do it. I certainly am not going to be able to stand against it and hope to succeed.
Either the Bible is the word of God or it is a massive fraud. I believe that it has stood the test of time. I believe that the Bible is the word of God!
